Small man with mic

tjay / mc

Origins: How did you first get into drum and bass? Was there a particular artist or track that sparked your interest?

Always enjoyed the sound of drum n bass, but it wasn’t till my closest mates got a set of decks, that i really got into it. Soon realised i don’t have the skill set or patience of a dj and didn’t wanna be left out, so an Mc it was 😏

First mic: What was the first piece of equipment you ever owned, and do you still have it?

First mic was a Schure sm58, Can’t go wrong.

Influences: Who are your top three influences in the drum and bass scene, and why?

Eksman and skibba. Two proper double time Pioneers, and honestly the last one is MCBC, without him i would never have had the confidence to pick a mic up on stage, he’s opened many doors for me ❤️

Creative Process: What’s your typical process for preparing a set? Do you prefer to plan meticulously or improvise based on the crowd's vibe?

I suffer with quite high functioning anxiety, so for me it’s a lot of music that i resonate with, which tends to normally not be drum and bass. Couple grounding exercises, but as soon as i walk through the doors of the venue, the anxiety fades.

Crowd Connection: What’s your favorite part of performing live, and how do you connect with the crowd during your sets?

Being an mc is all about being that piece that connects the ravers to the dj, so it’s a lot of crowd interaction bars i say this you say that etc. But i also feel that if your watching me enjoy myself and throw myself around then how could you not enjoy it🤷‍♂️

Career Milestones: What’s the most memorable gig you've ever played, and what made it stand out?

Last year in the same weekend i played Under and Boomtown. Two unbelievable festivals in their own right! Was a lot of travelling tho.

Inspiration Sources: What inspires you outside of music?

Family, friends and mainly my sole progression. Seeing me go from somewhere at some point last year to having got further and progressed. is inspiration and motivation enough, don’t ever wanna be i. the same place i was same time last year, ya get itttttt

Personal Playlist: What are your go-to non-drum and bass tracks or artists when you’re relaxing or need a break from the genre?

Right now it’s Animal rescue- Marnz Malone & A2 anti. I love the feel of this track cos there is double time flows on a non dnb tune, proper skippy one dat. I’m a big uk rap guy, but i’m also proper into my r&b Ari-Kcamp another absolute favorite.

Learning Moments: What’s one mistake you made early in your career that taught you a valuable lesson?

Never burn the candle at both ends, it’ll only catch up to you in the near future.

Advice to New MC’s: What advice would you give to someone just starting in the drum and bass scene?

Just do what you feel like you should, be you. Don’t latch onto trends don’t do something because someone else has. Do it because it’s you.

Legacy Goals: What do you hope to achieve in your career, and what do you want your legacy in drum and bass to be?

Legacy goals is a mad one, i’d love to be doing the biggest stages with BC, seeing a bad boys active world tour would be gas 😂 Other than that i’m happy to be remembers as that little mad fella who jumps around the stage like a nob.

Favorite Venues: Do you have a favorite venue or festival to play at, and why does it hold a special place for you?

Under, first festival! Got to play with my best mates and i also met a very special someone there ❤️

Off the Decks: When you’re not on stage or making music, what are your hobbies or passions?

I’m in the gym five times a week, and then after that i’m a chill bloke. Spending time down boozer with the boys, or watching my little brother play footy, is ideal for me. I just coast outside DNB

Travel Tales: What’s the most interesting place your DJ career has taken you, and what did you take away from the experience?

Kettering😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 Me and BC have never seen a shit hole like it😭
