DSIRE / dj

Origins: How did you first get into drum and bass? Was there a particular artist or track that sparked your interest?

I got into drum and bass around 2017/2018 whilst I was at college, I strictly listened to Bassline and House music until I was introduced to Jump Up Drum and Bass where the energy had me hooked from the get go.

First Decks: What was the first piece of DJ equipment you ever owned, and do you still have it?

My first decks were DDJ-400s which I exchanged a few months down the line for DDJ-800 which actually made no use for me as I needed a 4 channel mixer. Believe it was few months after the 800s that I ended up buying DDJ-1000 and I’ve never looked back since.

Creative Process: What’s your typical process for preparing a set? Do you prefer to plan meticulously or improvise based on the crowd's vibe?

If I’ve got a set coming up I will prepare an entire mix ready for the set that I feel will work well considering the time slot and what sort of artists are booked for the event. However sometimes a plan can change depending on how the crowd are reacting, I feel I know when to play the right tunes and when a certain sub-genre has been overdone and it needs switching up to keep that vibe going.

Crowd Connection: What’s your favorite part of performing live, and how do you connect with the crowd during your sets?

There’s no better feeling than playing a tune and the crowd giving the middle finger or screwing their face on the drop!! That reaction is the reason I love DJ’ing

Career Milestones: What’s the most memorable gig you've ever played, and what made it stand out?

My most memorable gig has to be Under & Norwich Warehouse. Under was my first ever BIG crowd…best believe my knees were getting shakier by the minute! Norwich warehouse was insane, 4000 ravers inside a warehouse whilst taking over from Hybrid minds…yeah that was a very memorable moment for myself.

Collaboration Dreams?

As a producer that’s not long started the journey I’d love to collaborate with the likes of Majistrate/Amplify/Furnis. All 3 of these producer are quality in their own way and are a big inspiration for myself in music production!

Challenges you have faced as a DJ and how have you overcome them?

One challenge that I’ve faced is comparing myself or trying to be like others. In this game, especially with how times are now, it’s hard to try and not compare yourself to another whether that’s “they’re getting more bookings” or “they’re producing or mixing so much better than me” and for a while this effected me and drove me to silence on social media as I felt I wasn’t good enough and there’s people out there that deserve it more. If you feel the same the best thing I done was to mute EVERYTHING! Don’t allow yourself to see those people that you was comparing yourself to and just develop your skill in your own time. Enjoy the time of learning because it’s those times that’ll make you or break you as a DJ or Producer.

Off the Decks: When you’re not DJing or making music, what are your hobbies or passions?

I’ve always loved gaming even at a young age I was sneaking round my dad’s Ps2 playing GTA or Final Fantasy. Now-a-days if I’ve got any free time at home I’ll be on Xdefiant or CoD.

Legacy Goals: What do you hope to achieve in your career, and what do you want your legacy in drum and bass to be?

I would personally love to make a tune and see it being played on the radio or even by one of my favourite artists. I would also love to see SIN CENTRAL host a Festival and hopefully become one of the biggest promoters in the scene, 1 day at a time I feel we make that level!
